Cormorant Point
This was our last full day in the Galapagos – we were gutted š
It was an early start, waking up at 6am for a 6.30am hike. When we got off the dingy at Cormorant Point I immediately loved the island. Maybe it was the time of day and therefore the mist that still hung over the island but it just created a sense of peace and tranquillity that I havenāt felt in weeks. I loved it. All around us birds were chirping and the air was still lovely and cool.
We saw beautiful flamingos in the lake. Due to the lack of fresh water lakes, there are not many flamingos on the island and this lake only had about 15 resident flamingos.
We walked to the beach on the other side of the island and saw huge turtle ānestsā i.e. big holes in the sand where they would come and lay their eggs. There were two turtles mating in the ocean where they would stay for 2-3 hours before coming back to shore.
It was a very relaxing and beautiful walk.
Devil’s Crown
After breakfast we were going snorkelling at Devilās Crown, a small islet next to Floreana Island. This was undoubtedly the best snorkelling weāve done and even better than many dives weāve been on. Unsurprisingly, it is also considered to be the best snorkelling spot in the Galapagos.
We saw hundreds and hundreds of colourful and very big fish. Parrot fish was bigger than any weāve ever seen. Big schools of angelfish, golden rays, dozens of huge starfish, Galapagos sharks, white-tip reef sharks, and many many more amazing creatures.
Post Office Bay
We had one final stop left before the end of our trip ā Post Office Bay on Floreana Island. Since the 1700s whalers have been using a wooden barrel on the island as a mail box. The tradition continues today as visitors leave addressed postcards in the barrel and sort through left mail to deliver at home. We left another postcard for our travelling friends who will be here in early March and hopefully pick it up then.
Unfortunately by this time the weather turned against us and left the shallow waters quite choppy, which made snorkelling quite unpleasant. There were a few Green sea turtles out in the water but we couldnāt see a single thing as visibility was very poor, only about 2m or so. It was quite disappointing but given how lucky we have been with the weather and seeing all the wildlife, we couldnāt complain too much.
We sat on the sundeck for the rest of the afternoon ā first in the hot tub and then around the bar finishing Daveās vodka and orange juice. We also saw a few whales but unfortunately they were at least a kilometre away so we could only see them blowing water. It was a wonderful end to an amazing time in the Galapagos and I would love to think we would be back one day.
